Reid says he won’t dwell on race-based controversy – Yahoo! News
WASHINGTON – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sought to slam the book shut Monday on a controversy stemming from remarks about President Barack Obama’s race and dialect, and a string of forgiving statements from prominent blacks made clear his leadership post is not in immediate jeopardy.
While nationally prominent Democrats ranging from Obama to the Rev. Al Sharpton have rallied to his side, the impact of the gaffe in Reid’s home state of Nevada is unpredictable. The 70-year-old majority leader is seeking re-election this fall, and recent polls show him trailing potential Republican rivals.
Republicans have called on Reid to step down as majority leader, a move that would undermine his re-election chances in Nevada, where he is running as a powerful senior lawmaker who can deliver for his home state.
Reid’s remarks in his home state were his first in public since the weekend disclosure that he had described Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign as a light-skinned African-American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” Those reflections appear in a new book, “Game Change,” by Time magazine’s Mark Halperin and New York magazine’s John Heilemann.
Two days later, Reid said he agreed on that last point, and sought to shore up his civil rights credentials. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., head of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Sharpton also said Reid did not deserve to lose his leadership position as a result of his comments. New York Gov. David Paterson, who is black, said Reid’s remarks were reprehensible and degrading, but he said Reid shouldn’t lose his leadership post as a result.
Obama, asked about the controversy in a TV One interview, said Reid “used some inartful language in trying to praise me.”
Reid has a history of sparking controversy with off-the-cuff remarks, and possibly as a result, he rarely makes appearances on television interview programs. Several months later, in comments to high school students in Nevada, Reid said the president was a loser, then called the White House swiftly to apologize.
While Democrats quickly coalesced around Reid, Republicans sought political gain in the controversy.
Lott spoke at a 100th birthday party for Sen. Strom Thurmond, who sought the White House a half-century earlier on a platform of racial segregation.
Steele did not mention that it was Bush’s White House and fellow Republicans, embarrassed by the comments, who ultimately pushed Lott from his leadership position.
Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the GOP leader, refrained from criticism.

Obama to outline counterterrorism reforms – Yahoo! News
WASHINGTON (Reuters) –
U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday will outline an initial series of reforms aimed at helping to thwart future attacks like the attempted Christmas Day airline bombing, an administration official said on Monday.
The security reforms, which Obama will talk about in a statement after a meeting with intelligence chiefs and other security officials, will include improvement in the U.S. "watchlisting" system for suspected terrorists, the official said.
The changes follow criticism of the Obama administration's counterterrorism policies, mostly from opposition Republicans, in the aftermath of the failed December 25 attack on a Detroit-bound plane. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said instability in Yemen, where the bombing suspect has been linked to al Qaeda militants, posed a global threat and pledged to plug any holes in U.S. security procedures after the attack.
"With respect to what happened with the terrorist on the plane coming into Detroit, we are not satisfied," Clinton told reporters following a meeting with visiting Qatar Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani.
REPUBLICAN QUESTIONS
House of Representatives Republican leader John Boehner said on Monday the Christmas plot raised new questions about the Obama administration's security strategy, including its plan to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and transfer some inmates to U.S. facilities.
"All year long, Republicans have asked the question: what is this Administration's overarching strategy to confront the terrorist threat and keep America safe?," Boehner said in a statement.
Two separate Senate committees on Monday announced hearings for January 20 to examine missteps that led to the failed attack, including improving capabilities to prevent such attacks and the effectiveness of passenger screening.
IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, NOW YEMEN
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemen branch of Osama bin Laden's network, claimed responsibility for the attempt to blow up the plane, which was carrying almost 300 people.
Clinton said the U.S. Embassy in Yemen — which closed on Sunday along with two other Western embassies due to unspecified al Qaeda threats — would only reopen when security conditions permit.
Yemeni forces on Monday killed at least two al Qaeda militants it said were behind the threats, Yemeni security officials said.
Clinton said the situation in Yemen, where the United States supports a government offensive against Islamic militants amid a Shi'ite revolt in the north and separatist unrest in the south, was of global concern.
"Obviously, we see global implications from the war in Yemen and the ongoing efforts by al Qaeda in Yemen to use it as a base for terrorist attacks far beyond the region," Clinton told reporters.
General David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, said last week the United States would more than double its security assistance program for Yemen.
