Black Gold ain`t so lovely is it

Ever since the oil rig exploded and the oil is still gushing out and not contained many rumors and speculations have risen and still arising. So far 210,000 gallons or 55,200 liters of oil is gushing out from the ruptured pipe. 11 workers have already lost their lives. Apparently, they are still trying to stop the oil from gushing into the sea by having containment over it. But so far it seems that the gas hydrates forming ice crystals inside causing it clog up. Till now, they are still evaluating other options to stop the oil from polluting the sea.

Since the day the incident happened people were complaining about how President Obama was too slow to respond to the situation and BP is an irresponsible company in what it does. So far from what I know and researched it seems that BP is actually quite strict about safety. It was actually in its 7th year without a lost time accident. And comments from others made claims that BP is one of the safest companies to work for. The day before the incident it seems that Halliburton Energy Services has been doing some maintenance work 5,000 feet below. Halliburton is “graciously” owned by Dick Cheney who has been accused of allowing torture.

The President`s slow response could be due to the fact that the company itself might have wanted to resolve the situation by itself. Not really sure about these speculations as there are no proper evidence. But what happened is a tragedy, lives were lost and the environment is pretty much getting messed up. Even at such an event there are still morons out there making the most ridiculous comments just for publicity. A good example is Rush Limbaugh; he said that the oil that is gushing out into the sea is natural. In a way it is not harming the environment. That’s like saying you can mix fecal matter with water and still drink it because it is natural.

That is not the end folks; those people who are claiming that global warming is fake are saying the rapture will happen no matter what so might as well do what we want. Are they really asking for death or just being oblivious? I really do not know. Quite a number of whom that asked for offshore drilling for oil in the past are now having a change of heart after seeing this incident take place, remember “Drill baby drill”. But still it is very difficult for allot of us to go on a use alternative energy sources. One is the cost and the next is whether there is sufficient amount. We are too dependent on oil and corporate lobbyists are not going let go of us from using oil that easily.

Oil is something we still need even if it has another alternative fuel to replace it. Most of our products that we use daily somewhat have oil in them. These things have made our lives so much easier. So when will we stop sucking the oil from the earth? I do not know. Maybe a prayer or a scientist could possibly find a replacement for oil. But for those who worked and are still working on the oil rigs around the world, you definitely get my respect.

Obama risky in Copenhagen

President Obama is going to attend the last few days of the climate change summit in Copenhagen. This could be Kyoto once again, where the President was in favor of climate change regulation, but the Congress shot it down.

Firstly, let me make it clear. Climate change is a reality. The very fact that there would not be ice sheet in the Arctic region and that companies are planning to use it as a sea route should be proof that it is real. When islands literally would disappear (Maldives), you know it is real. When coastlines are encroaching land (Philippines, Bangladesh, Western India), you know that it is real. Just because some hoaxers come up and give nonsense about them hacking climate change e-mails, it does not mean that climate change is fake.

So I am for solving the problem of climate change. I am not however, accepting that taxing carbon is the way to go. Should we tax carbon, it would just encourage corporations to change only if it is financially viable. It can be worked round. We are human beings, we would always find a way out.

I would rather prefer regulations with muscle. For example, lets ban plastic bags already! We could use paper bags that we did in the 60s. We should ban plastic bottles in favor of the greener Tetra packs. We can demand that all vehicles be 25% cleaner within 5 years. It is these kind of tough regulations that would force the industries to be energy efficient.

That is the main reason my support for the ACES bill is not a strong one. Another concern I have is that we cannot afford it. The government is literally offering options that can provide green energy rebates that are so large, that corporations can technically give free of charge “green” electricity to the populace and still make money!

That being said, I think that the President is really playing a sorry game over here. While the Democrats may be the ones controlling the house this time, they are weak and pathetic. They do not have the muscle that they require. They would lose the climate bill as much as they are losing the health care debate today. The Republicans would not allow the President Obama to have the bill either.

That is why, I think that the President should be making concerted efforts locally rather than internationally. He should be banging on the doors of his Democrats and get his left wing base ready. He should be talking to us Independents rather than talking to the Republicans about having climate change regulation. If it is to include more tax breaks kind of ideas, I would be pist!

I think that President Obama is really putting his foot in his mouth should he makes any kind of commitment in Copenhagen. It would be stupid to the max! He really should know that he does not have any leverage to make promises such as this.

At best, he can only make promises about helping to create green jobs. And for that, we do not need to send our President over there. We still have a Secretary of State right? Let her do all this. We still have the Environmental Protection agency right? Send them instead please.

I really think that it would be embarrassing that our President went overseas when everyone know that he cannot pull it off at home. I hope he proves me wrong though!
