Advice for the Republican party
Many have said that this is the Republican party in the deepest it has been in a couple of decades. Some are also saying that this could be the end of the Republican party. So what is it that the Republican party should do?
Here is my advice. Firstly, get rid of the social conservative only mindset that is inherent in the Republican Party. They should allow people that are pro-choice, gay and anti gun into their fold. Start showing the social change that people are afraid of.
They must stop people verbally steps on others that abort and stop saying that they would go after doctors that do so too. Get a gay into office. That would mean the change of this uptight ultra religious people that make up the Republican party. Get Muslims into office. That would break the image of Republican being Islamo-phobic. Stop being the party of God and let agnostics be accepted.
The best part is that there are already people out there that are such. Rudy Giuliani is pro choice and he was a very popular Mayor and is quite popular amongst Republicans. Andrew Sullivan is a blogger that is gay and he is Republican. Raihan Salaam and Muhammed Ali Hassan are very loyal Republicans and Muslims. Christopher Hitchens is now more Republican than he is a Democrat.
But there is this majority of the hardliners that have veered too far to the right. During the Republican Primaries there were plenty of examples that we can learn from in there. In the very first pre-debate interview, when FOXNews went around asking for viewpoints, the Republicans then generally said that they want the party to elect somebody that is proud of being a right winger and would not move to the center during the election. That is the kind of thing that has landed the party in trouble.
In another debate in the Republican primaries, a gay General asked a question about gays in the army, and the entire crowd booed him down. That is something that is really a turn off for independents. That man served the country well enough for the country to give him a star on his shoulder and people boo him for being gay?
How many times have we heard Republicans saying that President Obama is Muslim during the election? We all know now that he is not though there are still some people that believe that he is. But why then was Colin Powell vilified when he said “So what if (President) Obama was Muslim.”
These are all examples of what the Republican party needs to change. They need to do it quick too. That is also the basis of what Senator Specter said in Meet the Press on Sunday. That is something that is very true and something that the republicans need to look in to.
The other aspect is that of competency of Republicans. There are some Republicans that are very good at what they do and are popular across the board. Very good examples are people like Senator John McCain, ex-Senator Chuck Hagel, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice and even Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. They got to stop having people like Governor Sarah Palin, Representative Michelle Bachmann and House Minority leader Eric Cantor. These people are not competent enough and are very poor as compared to others.
Lastly, when Republicans reject a move by President Obama, they better give a better solution and not just say that they do. A classic example was the stimulus package. They were so against it and then claimed that they had a plant that cost half as much and create double the amount of jobs. But after reading the Republican’s version, you would know that the claim is nonsense!
I would say that I do not think that the Republican party is dead. I think that it is still feeling the after effects of the Bush Administration’ incompetency. Anyone that writes them off would do so to their own peril. I think that should the biggest thing that can work for them is that if the Democratic party veer left themselves. If there are another 15 more Barney Franks on the Democrats’ side, I think that the Democrats would lose their election anytime, any day.
